# Takeroom > Takeroom is a free guitar recording studio that runs in the browser. Play along to a backing track, record guitar and webcam together, and export an MP4 with the full mix. It runs entirely in a desktop web browser (Chrome or Edge), with nothing to install and no account needed. Recordings stay on the user's computer unless they sign in and save a project to the cloud. ## Links - [Open the studio](https://takeroom.studio/projects): the app itself. Recording needs a person at the computer: the browser asks for microphone (and optionally camera) permission. - [Help](https://takeroom.studio/help): setting up an audio interface, latency calibration, recording, effects, exporting, saving, privacy and browser support. ## How it works 1. **Load a song.** Drop in the track you want to play along to and set its tempo, so the click and bar numbers line up. 2. **Arm and record.** Arm a track and press R. A one-bar count-in plays, then your guitar, the backing track and your webcam record together. 3. **Export the take.** Balance the mix and export an MP4 for social, a WAV for your teacher or stems for your DAW. ## Features - **Audio, MIDI and camera.** Record guitar, mic and MIDI keyboard on separate tracks, with your webcam captured alongside each take. - **Redo it.** Record again until it’s right. Each new take replaces the last, and one click brings the old one back. - **Effects, nothing baked in.** Clean, overdrive, 90s rock and bit-crusher for guitar; clear vocals, reverb and pitch correction for voice. Takes are recorded dry, so you can change the effect any time. - **Tuner, click, count-in.** Tune up inside the studio. The click plays in your headphones and never ends up in the recording. - **Always in time.** A four-second calibration measures your interface’s delay and lines every take up with the backing track. - **Picture and sound in sync.** Webcam and audio are recorded together and stay aligned in the export, with a fine-tune slider if you need it. ## Export formats - **Video** (MP4 · MOV): Covers for TikTok, Reels and YouTube, with the full mix. - **Audio** (WAV · MP3 · FLAC): Sharing a take or sending it to your teacher. - **Stems** (ZIP of WAVs): One file per track for mixing in your DAW. - **MIDI** (.MID): Keyboard parts for notation or another app. ## Who it's for Guitarists who: - **Post covers.** Record with the original song behind you and export a video ready to post. - **Are learning.** Record along to lesson tracks and export your attempts to hear your progress. - **Write songs.** Catch a riff before it’s gone, then stack rhythm, lead and a keys part on top. - **Teach.** Record a lesson part on camera and send students the video or the stems. ## Questions ### Is Takeroom free? Yes. Recording, effects and every export format are free, there’s nothing to install, and you don’t need an account. Exported videos carry a small takeroom.studio watermark, which you can turn off in the export settings. ### What do I need to record guitar with Takeroom? A desktop or laptop computer with Chrome or Edge, and headphones. A USB audio interface such as a Focusrite Scarlett gives the best guitar sound and is picked up automatically, but a USB or built-in microphone works too. A webcam is optional. ### Can I record my guitar and webcam video at the same time? Yes. Turn the camera on for a track and the webcam records alongside every take. The export is an MP4 or MOV with the full mix, with picture and sound kept in sync. ### Can I play along to my own backing track? Yes. Drop in an MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC or OGG file up to 200 MB, then type or tap in its tempo so the click and bar numbers line up. The backing track goes into the final mix; the click never does. ### Will my recording be in time with the backing track? Yes. A four-second calibration measures your audio interface’s delay once, and every take is shifted by that amount so it lines up with the song. ### Where are my recordings stored? In your browser, on your computer. Nothing is uploaded unless you sign in and choose Save to cloud, which lets you open the project on another computer. You can also export a project file as a backup. ### Which browsers and devices does Takeroom work on? Chrome and Edge on a desktop or laptop give the full studio. Firefox works with some limits, Safari has no MIDI and less reliable timing, and phones and tablets aren’t supported. ### What formats can I export? Video as MP4 or MOV, audio as WAV, MP3, FLAC, M4A or OGG, stems as a ZIP with one WAV per track, and MIDI tracks as a .mid file. ## Notes for agents - Takeroom has no public API. Everything happens in the page, on the user's own computer. - Recording uses the user's microphone, audio interface and webcam, so a person has to be present to grant permissions and play. - Stems are per recorded track. Takeroom does not split a finished song into instruments.
